Emogene "Emma" McCullar age 73 and a Porterville resident for the past 41 years passed away January 4, 2013 in Porterville." Emma", as everyone knew her, was born April 26, 1939 at Sallisaw, OK to Arch and Carlie Timmerman who moved to California in 1947 and settled in McFarland. Emma received her education in McFarland, graduated from McFarland High School in 1957 and took a job as a telephone switchboard operator for several years before marrying Leroy McCullar in 1960. In 1972 she and Leroy purchased a restaurant in Porterville called the Pig Pen but after just 6 months Leroy passed away unexpectedly leaving Emma and their son Stephen and daughter Carol. Ever determined, Emma carried on and in 1974 she sold the Pig Pen to her brother and purchased a larger restaurant on Main street called The Cellar. Emma loved to serve her customers and took great joy in pleasing them and would often surprise them with extra appetizers or deserts or maybe even ask them to give their opinion on a new entrée she was trying out. Customers were usually greeted with a wave and some kind words and over the years she came to think of her countless friends as her "extended family". Emma had many interests and enjoyed playing Keno at the casino's, fishing, traveling to Lake Tahoe, visiting Branson, Mo and spoiling her dogs Princess and Brat. Her greatest joy however was always her family and especially her great grandchildren. Emma was a member of the Porterville New Life Center Church and was preceded in death by her husband Leroy McCullar in 1973 and her son Stephen McCullar in 1979.
