Louis "Louie" Carabay passed away on September 25, 2013 in Porterville at the age of 78. He was born to Jose Carabay and Guadalupe Hernandez Carabay on November 11, 1934 in Fort Quitman, TX.

Louis liked to tell everyone that they held a parade every year for his birthday. When Louis was about 10 years old his family moved to California. Louis attended the local schools in Porterville. In 1952 he joined the U.S. Navy, this was during the Korean War era. He served for two and a half years with some of the time spent as a Gunners Mate aboard the U.S.S. York Town CVA 10. He received the National Defense, Korean Service, United Nations and KPUC Ribbons. When he returned to the States, he met his future wife, Silvia Garfield.
He moved to the Tule River Reservation with his wife and lived there for the rest of his life. He worked for the logging industry starting at the Tule River Saw Mill, then became a truck driver until his retirement six years ago.
Louis is preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Carabay; son, Franklin "Marty" Carabay; parents Jose and Guadalupe Carabay; brothers, David and Daniel Carabay and sister, Petra. He is survived by his four sons, Clay Garfield, Matt, Ronnie and Raymond Carabay; and one daughter, Julie Carabay, all of the Tule River Indian Reservation; five brothers, Jerry, Jesse, Albert, Steve and Michael; five sisters, Clo, Belia, Francis, Natalie and Marylou all of Porterville. Along with 20 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
All services will be held at Mater Dolorosa Mission, Tule River Indian Reservation, Porterville, California. Visitation on Monday, September 30, 2013 from 4:00 PM through the night. A Rosary will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Tule River Indian Reservation, Lower Cemetery in Porterville, California.
