Shirley Josephine Guinn Bastian, a life-long resident of Porterville, passed away here on Sunday, December 4, 2011. She was 97.|
A visitation will be held at Myers Chapel on Thursday, December 8th from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at Vandalia Cemetery on Friday, December 9th at 2:00 PM. The service is to be officiated by her nephew, Chris Bastian of Grand Avenue Methodist Church.
Shirley was born in Porterville on February 24, 1914 to George and Etta E. Guinn. She was raised on a ranch east of Fountain Springs and rode her horse two miles everyday to attend school at Fountain Springs. She later attended and graduated from Porterville High School.
Upon graduating from High School in 1932, at San Louis Obispo, she married George Bastian. They purchased a home and acreage in the Teapot Dome area, where they lived for 62 years of their married life. She was a homemaker, loving wife and mother. Shirley enjoyed working in her yard, always having a beautiful garden full of flowers. She had a large family of nine brothers and sisters and many friends. Shirley was a fun loving person who always had a joke or story to tell her friends.
Shirley was a member of the Methodist Church, 20 Ands and Orange Belt Saddle Club. The saddle club sponsored the Porterville Roundup Rodeo for 8 years, she always sold the advertising for the rodeo program. Shirley and her husband George were both active with the Porterville College Booster Club, cooking and serving pre-game meals for the football team.
She is survived by her two daughters, Karen Reed and Trish Elam of Porterville; son, Ted Bastian of Porterville; four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; sister, Gerry Milinich of Bakersfield.
