Milt Burtner of Strathmore, CA passed away peacefully on April 4, 2013. He came into this life February 4, 1922 in Porterville, CA, the youngest child of Charles and Irene Burtner.
Milt graduated from Porterville College and continued on to Cal Poly, San Dimas to pursue a degree in Citrus Management and Production. His college education was interrupted by World War II where he served both Stateside and in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic.
He reported to Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, CA in April of 1943 and went on to Aircraft Mechanic training at Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, TX where he mastered the art of maintaining the famed B-25 Mitchell Bomber. Milt's leadership skills led to his promotion to crew chief and deployment to the Philippines. He served honorably and remained a supporter of the men and women of the Armed Forces his entire life. One of his proudest moments in life was attending the 2004 dedication of the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.
He spent many years as a salesman-engineer for Perma Rain Irrigation using his exemplary people skills to advise and sell irrigation systems around the Valley, and was a citrus grower.
Milt was active in his church and community, serving as an elder and choir director at the Presbyterian Church of Terra Bella, on the board of trustees of both Porterville Union High School and Porterville College. He is a past director of the Terra Bella Irrigation District and member of the board of the Porterville Citrus Association, Tulare County Fruit Exchange, and California Citrus Mutual. Milt was active in Rotary and served as president from 1967-68. He volunteered with and supported the YMCA and March of Dimes generously and tirelessly, and he lived the Rotary 4-Way Test in all aspects of his life. Milt was a member of the Happy Honkers Model A Club and as a lover of all musical genre, was always ready to hit the dance floor.
Milt was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine May Burtner. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, F. Ophelia "Buzz" Fisher-Burtner, sons Bruce (Jenny) and Roger, stepdaughters Louise, Juni and Susan Fisher, grandchildren Max, Claire, Matthew and Liz, Amanda and Ben, and three great-grandchildren, Lucas, Alexandria and Victoria.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Old Porterville Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon at the Presbyterian Church of Terra Bella, 9482 Road 238, Terra Bella, CA 93270. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the .
