  M. Caroline Shaper, 90, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Sunday, December 29, 2013, at 9 a.m. at Carriage Court Assisted Living where she had been residing since December 3. Caroline was born March 1, 1923, in Washington Court House, Ohio to Homer Glen and Carsie Jane Craig Garringer. She was a lifelong resident of this community. She was a 1940 graduate of Washington High School; a 1944 graduate of the Springfield Community Hospital School of Nursing and received a bachelor of science in education from The Ohio State University in 1948. Her work experiences included being instructor at the Jamison Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in New Castle, PA from 1944-1945; various nursing responsibilities at Fayette County Memorial Hospital from 1950-1961; educational coordinator at Fayette County Memorial Hospital from 1961-1966; fifth grade teacher at Cherry Hill Elementary School from 1966-1983 and assistant clerk of the Fayette County Archives from 1966 until her retirement in 2009. Caroline served in the Naval Nursing Corps during World War II. She was a life member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Community Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and the Fayette County Historical Society. She was a member of the First Families of Fayette County, Ohio; the Washington Court House Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Fayette County Agricultural Hall of Fame Committee; author of "Unpuzzling One David Geringer/Gerringer/Garinger/Garringer" in 1992, and was an amateur genealogist and writer of numerous historical and family histories related to Fayette County. On September 19, 1948, she married Charles R. Shaper. He preceded her in death on January 22, 2013. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Neil Shaper in 1969. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Thorne and Michelle Toth Shaper of Hagerstown, MD; three grandchildren, Kit Shaper of Fayetteville, GA, Tyler Shaper of Hagerstown and Brady Shaper of Bridgewater, VA; two sisters, Susie G. Helfrich of Washington Court House and Wilma Jayne (Billie) Sanderson and her husband, Richard, of Cypress, TX and two nieces, Sandy Launey of Cypress and Diane VanReed of Chalfont, PA. The funeral will be held Thursday, January 2, 2014, at 6 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with the Rev. James A. Kiger, Jr., pastor for Hospice of Fayette Co., Inc., officiating. A private burial will follow Friday morning in Washington Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Thursday until the time of the service.
