Eugene Harry "Gene" Alkire, 94, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Court House Manor where he had been a resident since March 14, 2013.
Mr. Alkire was born February 13, 1920, at Pleasantville in Fairfield County, Ohio to Raymond G. and Sylvia K. Fulton Alkire. He was a graduate of Washington High School and lived most of his life in this community.
Before his retirement in 1985, he was co-owner and operator of Alkire's Bakery.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as an usher and was a World War II veteran of the United State Army. He formerly was a member of the Washington Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, (Mary) Margaret "Margie" Alkire on October 18, 2013; by a son, Jon Alkire; a granddaughter, Melinda (Mindy) Penrod; two brothers, Fulton (Footie) and James Alkire and a sister, Charlene Fillerup.
Mr. Alkire is survived by a daughter, Ann F. Main and her husband, Steven, of Washington Court House; three grandchildren, Jason (Courtney) Penrod, Scott (Amanda) Penrod and Kevin (Ann Marie) Penrod, all of Washington Court House and 12 great grandchildren and a brother, Robert Alkire of Florida.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation took place.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in Washington Cemetery.
