Richard Bruce Brown April 19, 1942 - September 6, 2014 Richard Bruce Brown died at home with his family on September 6, 2014 after a year- long fight with leukemia. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 20 at his home. Burial will be at the Brown family plot at the Westwood Cemetery in Lassen County. Rick was born on April 19, 1942 in Ross, Calif. in the midst of a World War II blackout. His father, Harvey S. Brown, a Liberty ship Master in the Merchant Marines, was fortunate to be with his wife, Betty Schmidt Brown, at the time of his son's birth. Rick grew up in Mineral, Calif. where he attended a one-room school. He was an avid skier and outdoorsmen and a member of the National Junior Ski Patrol team at Mt. Lassen. He graduated from Red Bluff Union High School in 1960, and attended Santa Rosa Junior College and San Jose State. After college, he enlisted and served in the US Coast Guard Reserve. During high school Rick obtained his private pilot license and had dreams of becoming an airline pilot. Pursuing that goal, he worked and later flew for PSA Airlines out of San Diego. In 1970 he moved to Grass Valley where he worked as a flight instructor, charter pilot, and flew fire reconnaissance out of the Nevada County Airpark. While continuing to pilot planes and enjoying all aspects of aviation, he later worked in the timber industry, becoming a timberland and real estate investor. Rick loved to travel, particularly road trips with his daughters, in addition to Europe, fishing trips to Canada, Hawaii and Alaska. Rick was a loving, genuine and compassionate father to his two daughters and his five grandchildren. He had an engaging and friendly manner that endeared him to many, and he will be greatly missed by his friends, neighbors, and family. Especially his grandchildren, ages eight to 11 months, will miss their "Opa". Rick is survived by his daughters, Jamie Thayer (Allen) of San Francisco and Katherine Brown of Fort Jones, Calif.; grandchildren, Logan, Hunter, Addison, Phoenix and Miles; his sister, Robin Van Zee (Bruce) of Nevada City; uncle, Allan Schmidt; niece and nephew, Jennifer Carvalho (Mark) and Hardy Bullock (Kimberly) and his former wife, mother of his daughters and good friend, Fern Ellsworth. Donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Foothills.
