1926 - 2016 In Memoriam Condolences
HUBERT L. MILLS October 18, 1926 ~ December 12, 2016 Hubert Lynn Mills (Hugh) of Red Bluff, California died December 12th, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Redding, CA at the age of ninety. Hugh was born at home in Wray, Colorado on October 18th, 1926 to Clifton and Nellie Mills while they were homesteading there for a short time. His growing up years were spent on various farms in the Leon, Iowa area. He graduated from the Leon, Iowa high school (now known as Central Decatur High School) in 1945 and moved to Southern California to join his parents, who had recently moved there from Iowa. He went into the U. S. Army from there in 1945 and was discharged in 1947. In 1948, he returned to Iowa to marry his high school sweetheart, Betty Thompson. Together they moved to Southern California where they started their married life and he enrolled in George Pepperdine College. Upon graduation in 1951, they again returned to the Midwest where he started his teaching and coaching career in Mercer, Missouri. They also started their family with their son, Gary, born Dec. 26, 1951. After 2 yrs. of teaching and coaching in Missouri they moved to Kenesaw, Nebraska where daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1955. In 1956, they returned to California and moved to Red Bluff. He taught at Bidwell Jr. High School from 1956 through 1960, then taught and coached at Red Bluff Union High School from 1960 through 1985 when he retired after 34 yrs. of teaching. Their daughter, Lori, was born in Red Bluff in 1960. Hugh taught many subjects at Red Bluff High including History, Science, Math, Physical Education, and Drivers Education and Training. He probably will be most remembered for his coaching years in football, basketball and golf. Many of his students will remember him as their drivers training teacher, both under the wheel and in the classroom. They still approached him even years later reminding him of having him for a coach or their drivers training teacher. He was fortunate to have worked as a seasonal ranger for Lassen Volcanic National Park for 20 summers in the 1950's and 1960's and again in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He also worked two summers at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri. Those were cherished memories, especially in the 1950's and 1960's as his family was able to be with him. He also enjoyed one summer looking for forest fires on top of Inskip Lookout. He took up golf in later years and became an avid golfer. He also continued to enjoy watching sports and going to the basketball and football games. Hugh was involved with many local organizations including Tehama Museum, the Opportunity Center, Camp Tehama and a member of SIRS (Seniors in Retirement). He and Betty enjoyed playing dominoes once a month with a small group of mostly ex-park friends, and he enjoyed going to a coffee group in town almost every morning where they settled all the problems of the world. Over the years Hubert and Betty enjoyed attending the local Church of Christ, First Church of God and most recently a membership in the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff. Hugh was a wonderful father and role model for his kids and loving husband to Betty. Hugh is survived by his wife, Betty, three children, Gary and wife, Patty, of Lakeview, OR, Cheryl Hansen and husband, Tom of Lincoln, CA, and Lori Honrath of Houghton, MI.
