Sharon Kessey In Memoriam
SHARON MAE KESSEY September 8, 1942 - April 27, 2013 Sharon Kessey, 70, died of cancer in Red Bluff, CA. She was born and raised in Marin County, CA, then moved to San Francisco, where she earned degrees in psychology, biology, and teaching. She worked for a couple of years as a letter carrier, then traveled through Canada, eastern US, and Mexico, before hitchhiking to Alaska, where she fell in love with its mountainous beauty and wildness, and settled in Fairbanks. She worked as a field biologist, scuba diver, machine shop parts cleaner, pipeline surveyor and warehouse partsman, real estate salesperson, substitute teacher, builder of her own small house, traveler, then office worker at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Mining Extension and Geophysical Institute. She earned her MA in writing and wrote her book about the history in the street names of Fairbanks. After retiring, she began spending winters in Red Bluff, CA, near her elderly mother, and from 20062012 stayed year-round as full-time caregiver. She was a member of both Fairbanks' and Red Bluff's Garden Clubs, and was an accredited flower show judge. Sharon was predeceased by her mother, Marion Mae (Keele, Kessey) Dunlap; father, Ira Sylvanus Kessey II; and brother Peter Jay Kessey. She is survived by her husband, Roger B. McPherson; son, Nathan Cody Kessey; sisters Jeanne Reuter and Kris Kessey; brothers Barry Kessey, Michael Dunlap, and Ira Kessey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She had a good time and was sorry to leave.
