Armstrong, Ben Bernerd - Redding
Ben Bernerd Armstrong Redding, CA Ben Armstrong passed away at his home on Saturday, June 25, 2016 with his family by his side. Ben was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on September 14, 1932 and was a lifelong resident of Shasta County. He graduated from Shasta High School in 1950 and served two years in the United States Army during the Korean War conflict and was Honorably discharged in 1954. Ben owned and operated a commercial construction company and he built several of the bridges, schools and other public works projects that are still in use here in Northern California. He was a parishioner at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a member of the Asphalt Cowboys for 32 years. Ben or "Gentle Ben" as he was affectionately referred to by his friends was quiet, kind and unimposing yet the impact he had on the lives he touched is lasting and profound. Ben truly enjoyed his work, playing Gin with his fellow Cowboys, and watching and coaching his sons' sporting events. He enjoyed being outdoors especially golfing, fishing, and hunting. Most of all Ben loved his wife and the family they created together. Ben married Karlene, the love of his life for over 59 years, on June 15, 1957, and she was by his side at the end. Together, they enjoyed traveling the country in their motorhome or just relaxing in the cooler temperatures of Brookings, Oregon but Redding will always be home. Most recently, he loved his nightly "happy hour" enjoying his backyard while watching the birds, squirrels, or deer, Karlene always at his side. His love for Karlene and his children and grandchildren was clearly evident and unquestioned. His home was always a gathering point for family. In addition to Karlene, Ben is survived by his three sons: Stephen; Richard and his wife Andrea; and Robert; and his daughter Stacey Maines and her husband Mark. Ben and Karlene have 10 grandchildren: Sean, Trent, Cort, Kelly, Miranda, Michaelene, Emma, Blake, Nicole and Kayla. Ben is preceded in death by his parents Ben and Denise Armstrong and his sisters Venita and Vera. A rosary for Ben will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church on Gold Street in Redding, CA on Thursday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. A Catholic mass and funeral will also be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday, July 1 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will immediately follow.
