Barbara van Putten

Barbara, age 78, passed peacefully after a long illness.

She is survived by her life partner of 32 years, Barbara Wallace of Shasta Lake City, brother Jim (Sharon) van Putten of Holland, MI., nephews Dirk of Felton, CA., Jim (Susan) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and three great nieces. She is also survived by her California family (the Wallace's of Chico, nieces Amy and Christina from Sacramento) and numerous decades-long friends.

Barbara was born in Carlinville, Illinois and became an educator for most of her adult life. After graduating from Hope College in Michigan (B.A.), Indiana University (M.A.) and post graduate work at USC, she became a coach, professor and administrator at Humboldt State University for over 33 years. She was inducted into the HSU Hall of Fame in 2000. Needless to say, she was a beloved coach (volleyball and softball were her specialties), a professor who was constantly challenging her students to reach beyond themselves and a skilled department chair bridging athletics and teaching.

Her travels took her to many countries. She especially enjoyed eco - traveling and was asked on one of her trips by a Fijian family if they could adopt her.

Barbara was a great competitor, had a witty and wacky sense of humor, was a generous contributor to many causes and enjoyed a fine red wine.

Barbara's heart was always open to those in need. She will be missed by those who love her. There is comfort in knowing her indomitable spirit is still alive and well.

Deepest thanks to the staff and caregivers at Willow Springs and Hospice of Mercy - your compassion and caring go beyond words.
