DON CURTIS BANGHART

Don Curtis Banghart was born June 30, 1941 in Pennsylvania; he passed away surrounded by family on Christmas Eve December 24, 2012 after a courageous battle against lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Itha Beverly Banghart, his sister Joy (Bob) Appleton, his sister-in-law Catherine, his ex-wife Jeanne, his daughter Katrina (Robert) Bray, son Kenneth (Jen), and grandchildren Carly, Christy, Cameron, Courtney, Tamryn, Kaleb, also Dillon, Travis and Troy (Ross).
Don had several careers in his lifetime; 37 years in the California Department of Forestry, owner of B-hart Country Quarter Horses from 1990-2000, and California Real Estate from 1999 to the time of his death.
Don began his career as a seasonal firefighter in 1958. He was quickly promoted up the ranks, including positions as San Bernardino Unit Fire Chief and Fire Warden, eventually to appointment as CDF Region II Chief in Redding. While in San Bernardino Don managed as many as 50 fire stations and traveled to China and Mexico on work-related trips. From 1973-74, Don was the President of the California Department of Forestry Employees Association. He retired from CDF in 1995.
Don loved spending time outdoors with his family and friends camping, fishing, packing, hunting, and riding horses. He was always ready for a good game of Scrabble, Cribbage or Upwards. He lived in Shasta County over 25 years after moving from Southern California for his CDF career. He belonged to several organizations in his lifetime including the California Professional Foresters, CDF Employees Association, CFSA, Back Country Horseman, Shasta Co. Assoc. of Realtors, Calif. Assoc. of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors. He held both California Broker and real estate licenses. Don frequently hunted and packed in the Marble and Trinity Alps Wilderness and traveled to the North Coast of Fort Bragg and Mendocino annually to go salmon fishing and crabbing. He edited a CDF book titled "The California Division of Forestry (1927 through 1976) and held a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Land Management from Humboldt State University.
Don had a deep and abiding faith, and did not fear death, because he knew where he was going. He was an active member of Redding 1st United Methodist Church for 22 years. He and Beverly were faithful members of Shasta Lake U.M.C. since 2009. Don so loved music that he sang in the choir where ever his family attended church.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the John Beaudet Community Center at 1525 Median Avenue in Shasta Lake, CA for family and friends on Sunday January 13, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
