Arthur Johnson Obituary

Arthur Burton Johnson

1922 - 2010

Arthur B. Johnson was born September 1, 1922 in Orange, CA to Herbert (Ringtail) and Alma Johnson.

Growing up Art worked with his Dad in the road oiling business in Signal Hill, CA. Art learned to repair diesel engines and had an affinity for machinery.
Art enlisted in the Navy in 1942. That WWII duty affected his whole life. Art served on an LST as a Chief Motor Mac. His ship LST 470 was part of every major battle in the South Pacific and earned 8 Battle Stars and a Navy Commendation. Art would look at what life threw at him and measure it against surviving WWII and say, "That doesn't really look like that big a deal, and if it isn't brain surgery let's give it a try."
Art settled in Shingletown after the War. He ranched and built a sawmill. Art's sawmill burned down and he went to logging. Art met the new schoolteacher in town and married Eva, August 25, 1951.

Art is survived by wife Eva, children; Arthur, Squire, Nancy and Kim, 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and brother Clyde Johnson.

Art turned dirt over in every county in Northern California and left his mark on the mountains.
Art loved the community of Shingletown and served on the Black Butte School board for 24 years. Art was a member of the Shingletown Historical Society.

Donations can be made to the Society in Art's memory (P.O. Box 291, Shingletown, CA 96088)

Art made his transition at 88 years on November 11, 2010.
The funeral date is Saturday November 20, 2010 @ 11 am at Allen & Dahl Chapel in
Palo Cedro, CA, reception to follow at Black Butte School.

Bill and Lucy Phelps and all the Guyn kids think lovingly of Art and Eva and all they did for our young family when we lived in Shingletown. The Johnsons are the epitome of loving neighbors.

I will miss Art so very much. I thoroughly enjoyed when he came into Pulmonary Rehab and had such fun calling him "boyfriend". (It was okay with Eva, we asked her.). He relished telling stories of his youth and I enjoyed every one of them. My throughts and prayers are with Eva, Nancy and the rest of his family. He is in God's hands now and probably running the fields of heaven with such great joy!
