Donald Rodgers Obituary

Donald Paul Rodgers

1932 - 2010

Don passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, December 30, 2010.
Don was born in Binghamton, New York on November 5, 1932 and grew up in the countryside outside Utica, NY.

He loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing, hunting and trapping. His family moved to Oakland, CA and he attended Oakland High School where he was a three-sport athlete. He then attended UC Berkeley and played football for Pappy Waldorf. After graduation he served in the US Army in Germany. After his military service Don was a 6th grade teacher at Westwood Elementary School in Concord, CA for twenty years. He also worked for Chevron for several years before retiring in 1993. Don moved to Redding in 2002 upon his marriage to Stephanie Goldstein of Redding. He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and boating on Shasta Lake. Over the years he taught many people how to water ski. Yearly halibut fishing trips to Alaska were always a treasured event.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Stephanie, sister, Ann Stewart of Gardnerville, NV, and four nieces.

A reception in his honor will be held at the Rodgers' home on Saturday, January 15, 2011,
from 1 pm to 4 pm for friends and family.

Don Rodgers was "Uncle Don" to me. Without reservation his four nieces adored him. There were numerous trips in our childhood to Lakes Shasta and Berryessa. We would fish and water-ski and camp out with Don's Pleasant Hill neighbors, including various kids and dogs, tents and motor boats. Don could be strict but what I remember most was the teasing. He loved to tease us. And we loved him to do it! He was treasured and we will miss him.

i remember Don from, not only OHS, but our time @ UCB together. He was a bright and scintillating friend and man. I had completely lost touch w/ Don over these many years; i regret that so terribly!! . I wish for him peace, love and all the serenity that he deserves. I remain fondly yours, Dr. Wendy Becker-Raabe (class of 1966 OHS and class of UCB 1970 and 1972
