John Smith Obituary

John "Jack" Frederick Smith

1933 - 2010

Jack Smith passed away on Monday, November 29, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center
in Redding, CA, after a short illness. Jack was diagnosed with late stage lung cancer and remained upbeat and positive throughout his illness.

Jack was born January 10, 1933, to John Rodda and Maybelle Jacqueline (Rita) Smith (Marsh) in Berkeley, CA. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1951. Jack was an Electrician's apprentice prior to joining the Navy in 1955. He served four years as a Aircraft Electrician and was honorably discharge in December 1960. Jack returned to IBEW 595 in Alameda, CA, and completed his electricians apprenticeship. Jack was a strong union man and was a mentor to many people serving in the union. Many members praised Jack for his patience and positive encouragement throughout his career. Jack retired in 1995. While living in the bay area, Jack spent a great deal of spare time golfing and restoring a 1962 Italian type Velorossa Spyder.

Jack and Cynthia started their lives together in 1976 by moving to Martinez, San Ramon and finally moved to Redding in 2000 to live close to children and their families.

They were quick to become established in the Gold Hills community and developed many close and lasting friendships. Jack was a member of the Gold Hills Golf Club and was an enthusiastic golfer. When not golfing, Jack completed the Velorossa Spyder and started restoring a 1949 Ford Truck. Jack always found time to donate his electrical and mechanical skills to friends and neighbors. Jack was quite a good dancer and all the gals are going to miss being able to dance with him one last time. Friends and family are going to miss Jack's outgoing personality and the jokes he told more than once.

Jack was preceded in death by his oldest son, Scott in 1999.

Jack is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cynthia Smith; daughter, Stacey Shepherd (Alvin); son, Steve Smith (Maria); seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life for Jack will be held at
The Gold Hills Country Club, 1950 Gold Hills Dr., Redding, CA,
19th Hole Grill, on Sunday, December 19th from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Cynthia & Family:
Jack will be missed a great deal. Jack was quite a personality. Jack was Jack and there is no one like him. He will be greatly missed. We have enjoyed our friendship, and hope it continues with Cynthia. If there is anything we can do, please call.
