Patricia "Patty" Barada
March 9, 1920 –
November 11, 2010
Patty Barada, beloved wife of Kenneth Barada, passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2010. Born Harriet Patricia Cleveland in Berkeley at Alta Bates Hospital on March 9th, 1920, she grew up in the Berkeley/Kensington area and graduated from Richmond High School.
She served as an overseas telephone operator in Oakland at the beginning of WWII when mutual friends introduced her to Kenney, a tall handsome young man from Nebraska. Patty's brother, William Cleveland, escorted her to San Jose, CA where she married Kenneth on May 29th, 1942. She then danced her wedding night away on the boardwalk in Santa Cruz to the music of a popular big band. Patty and Kenney remained in Oakland, CA for awhile before moving to Rosalie, Nebraska, Ken's hometown, where they farmed and started their family of three children.
They returned to California in 1956 when they bought their home of 45 years in El Cerrito. She was an accomplished professional seamstress, and loved to dance, especially to the big bands of the 30's & 40's. Upon retirement Patty and Kenney enjoyed motor-home traveling through out North America. Patty especially enjoyed her travel experiences with Kenney in Europe.
They moved to Redding a decade ago to be near their oldest daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Gary Meurer.
Patty was married to Kenny for 68 years and her family was her greatest joy. She was patient and caring. She was truly loved by her family and everyone who knew her, especially her husband Kenneth who said, "If everyone was as good as she, this would be a beautiful world."
Patty is survived by her husband Kenneth Barada, sisters-in-law Althea Byers, Betty Updike, and Joanne Kubik, son John Barada, daughter Margaret Mathison, grandchildren Richard Gibbon, Tina Barcelona, Faith Gibbon, Donavan Kinyon, Kenny Kinyon, and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, November 19, 2010
at the Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito, Colusa and Fairmont Avenues.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be in the form of donations in Patty's memory to Mercy Hospice of Redding, 1544 Market Street, Redding, CA 96001.
