Patrick Roche Obituary

Patrick J. Roche

1932 - 2014

Patrick Jesse Roche, 81, of Redding, CA passed away the afternoon of April 1st, 2014.

Patrick was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, on April 30, 1932, to Francis and Jesse Roche. He graduated from high school in Ogden, Utah, in 1950. He went on to receive his BS in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1955, completing his MS there in 1961. He married Kathleen Hurlocker Roche on September 7th, 1957.

Patrick leaves a legacy as a civil engineer with public works that connect people and places, including the Brotherhood Way pedestrian overpass, the Green Street Stairs, and the fountain at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco; He was proud of his "plain little bridges" on the Sacramento River Trail, and enjoyed working on Charlotte's Crossing in the McConnell Arboretum, Redding;

He was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed tying his own flies. Patrick loved going on backcountry fishing trips with his friends as well as hiking and camping. He introduced this love of nature to his family at an early age, and it was one of the reasons they relocated from San Jose to the Redding area. He was active with Habitat for Humanity and the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. He loved working in his organic garden alongside Kathleen, and planted her rose gardens as an expression of his love. Quick witted and never shy about making a joke, his puns will be sorely missed by us all.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen H. Roche. He is survived by his children, Heather Roche-Waldo and husband Raymond; Kelly Roche; Michael Roche; Kevin Roche and husband Andrew Trembley; Grandchild Alexander Waldo; Brother, Joseph Roche and wife Sue Ellen as well as his many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends.

Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, April 14th, 2014 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 2040 Walnut Ave., Redding, CA 96001. Reception immediately afterward.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Pat can be made to Shasta Cascade Habitat for Humanity or to Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

Our sympathies and prayers to you, Kelly and all of your family. It was a pleasure to meet your Dad when he stayed with you at White Sands. He and I immediately connected over our love of kitty cats. You and your brothers and sister are wonderful legacies of your Dad's and Mom's loving parenting.

To Kelley and family
My condolence to the loss of Kathleen and Patrick. Pat came to New Mexico to share a few weeks with Kelley. The resident volunteers really enjoyed sharing stories, shared laughs and his company at playing group dominoes. He liked the sun as it set on the dunes.

I only met him at Kevin and Andy's wedding, but I know that he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He leaves a wonderful legacy in his children and his works.
