Russell passed away in Eugene. He installed Redding's first television station (KVIP).
With a small group, Russ started the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). He also advocated for the establishment of Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB). Russ was a founding partner in Shasta Telecasting Corporation owning at various times the Ice Follies, San Francisco Seals, television stations, and concessions in Yosemite and Denali National Parks.
His three children - Linda Fuller, Karen Williams, Rusty Olsen - and their spouses survive him. His wife Jeanne died in 2006.
