Verne King Obituary

Verne King

October 25, 1922 - October 10, 2010

Verne King, longtime area resident, got his angel wings early Sunday Morning, October 10, 2010.

Verne has been a regular at the local watering holes and breakfast joints since the early forties. Born in Redding CA, Verne moved to Eureka with his family in the late 1930's.
He told stories of driving Hwy 299 with his brother Ray in a Model T.
Verne's first wife, Ruth, passed away in 1958 at the age of 36.

Verne has been known as a family man and a hard worker. He has many natural, adopted, and step children. Verne is survived by his ex wife and mother of his children, Nola King. His children are, Ray, Dan, Kelly, Randy, Rita (Sis), and Tony. Verne is grandpa and great grandpa to many grandchildren.

Verne started his career in Eureka with his brother Ray and Ossie Bussel as the co-owner of Rosewood Body Shop. Making a career change, he started driving gas engine log trucks. He told his sons about the flames shooting out of the stacks. His next log truck was the first Waukesha Dodge diesel log truck. He said it came with a live mechanic. Other firsts that Verne achieved with his log trucks were, one of the first with a jake break, turbo, and power steering. In the sixties, Verne expanded his business and ran pink trucks with red pin striping (Sis's choice) that he painted himself. Note: Verne was also color blind. In the seventies, he taught his boys to drive log trucks and that almost killed him. He retired after forty three years of hauling logs.

Verne was well known for his bountiful vegetable and flower gardens.
He spent most of his retirement gardening and tinkering in the shop. He cared for many orphaned pets who became part of the family but he never admitted to liking them. Verne was one of the kindest old timers.

If you would like to join the family in celebrating Verne's life, please join us at the
VFW Hall in Willow Creek, Saturday the 23rd of October at 3:00 pm
Care is under the direction of Paul's Chapel, 1070 H Street, Arcata, California.

Dan an family,
Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He was always a gentleman in business. I sold him parts for a great many years starting at Baywood and ending at Reliance. He was a good guy and I know you miss him. My condolences to all of you.
