Larry Graves passed away June 12, 2013 near Little Shasta while on a local flight with his good friend and fellow pilot, Lloyd Rugg. Larry was an only child born March 17, 1936 in Montague to Wesley and Myrtle Graves, who both preceded him. He attended grammar school in Montague and High School in Yreka until moving to Happy Camp halfway through his junior year. He always looked back fondly on his time downriver. After attending college in Redding, he returned to Siskiyou County to work with his Dad in logging. He later started his life-long career in real estate and land development in Siskiyou County, eventually forming a 30-plus year partnership with Bob and Betty Lightle.
The Guest Book is expired.
Larry married Sheri Lea in 1974 and together with Bob and Betty, they ran Frontier Construction until 1994. Larry attempted to retire but within a couple of years was running the little Montague airport. He was a charter member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He built a number of airplanes and encouraged young people to get involved with aviation by flying over one hundred "young eagle" flights.
Over the years, he was a strong supporter of the Montague Junior Rodeo and Ducks Unlimited, and performed in the old Montague Variety Show.
Larry participated heavily in every community he lived in. He was an avid hunter, pilot, business and family man. He never met a stranger and was always working on a new idea or project with someone.
Larry leaves his wife, Sheri and her two children, Allen and Trina; two sons, Wesley and Randy from his first wife Connie; son, Troy and daughter, Susan from his second wife Linda; four grandchildren, Josh, Whitney, Kayla and Alobar and 3 great-grandchildren, Ryder, Orval and River.
Private graveside services for Larry will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial service for Lloyd Rugg will be held at the Little Montague Airport at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, June 30th, followed by a Celebration of Life for Larry at 10:30 a.m. at the Montague Community Hall. Refreshments will be served. Memorial contributions may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097. Girdner Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. On-line condolences may be made at www.girdnerfuneralchapel.com.
