Mary Francis Barendt (Marble)
Of Cherry Valley, passed away December 3, 2012 after a long 18 year fight with cancer. She was born in Burlington, Iowa to her parents Arthur and Lenore Walz on December 28, 1936. She had five siblings that all preceded her in death. She bore two wonderful girls and raised them as a single mom. She worked as a clerk and a pharmacy tech for Thrifty Drug stores for 30 years and did her share of scooping ice cream for kids and dispensing help and medications to customers. She and her girl friends loved to dance and they would go all over Sothern California to kick up their heels, many times closing the bars and sometimes causing fights. She retired to travel and visit sun baked sands around the world. A nicer, more friendly person would be hard to find. She leaves her husband of 10 years, Roy Barendt, her daughters Lorie Manhan of Norco and Cathy Ketcham of Meadville Pa. eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
She loved to tell stories of her childhood in Quincy Il where she and her friends would cross the Mississippi River on a railroad trestle and if the train came over the bridge the kids would have to hang under the trestle till it passed. And of floating down the big river in little boats just like Tom Sawyer. Also there were stories of the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean and Caribbean in her hedonistic days.
Graveside service will be at Montecito Memorial Park in Colton Friday Dec. 7, 2012 at 2:30PM.
