Billie Jo Conger Obituary
Billie Jo Conger
Beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Billie Jo Conger passed away August 14, 2012, after a brief illness. Billie was born July 16, 1928, in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Hollywood. Billie was raised by her grandparents, Della and Will Hudson, while her father, Cecile Lee Wimberly, served as a Navy Lieutenant in World War II, and her mother, Lucille McAllister Hudson, served in the Women's Auxiliary Corps in Berlin, Germany, following World War II.
While attending Virgil Junior High School, Billie began to pursue her love for music, singing in the Girls Glee club and playing the piano. At Belmont High School, Billie sang with the Madrigals as a Lyric Soprano. At the age of sixteen, Billie sang with the Gypsy Serenaders at the Hollywood Bowl under the direction of Ralph Bloom. She would continue to study opera, performing with the Girls Trio on the Al Jarvis Show in 1950, and with The Elizabethans at the Wilshire Theatre. While in Junior High, Billie met her lifelong best friends, Georgia and Marilyn, whom she loved very much.
Billie met her husband while working at John Hancock Life Insurance in 1955 in South Pasadena. Married in 1956, they made their home in Altadena, before putting down roots in Alta Loma in 1974. While raising three children, Billie worked at Pilgrim Place, Xerox, Loral Corporation and Chaffey College.
Billie was a vibrant senior, participating in a wide variety of activities. She loved her friends from the Gibson center in Upland, and they in turn enriched her life. With her group of gals, she enjoyed dancing, going to the opera, celebrating their monthly birthdays, taking cruises and heading to Ventura Beach. She was active in local civic organizations, working on the phone committee for the Chaffey Community Republican Women's Federation.
She is preceded unto death by her husband, Basil Dwight Conger, who passed away August 15, 2004. She is survived by her three children, John, Mary and Joann, her five grandchildren, Brittany, Tyler, Katelyn, Kyle and Christopher, daughter-in-law Robin Conger, and son-in-law, Carl Fabian. In lieu of flowers, her family is asking contributions be given in her name to breast cancer charities. Known for her kindness, love for her family and her graciousness, beautiful Billie Jo was much loved, and her family and friends will miss her dearly.
Service will be held Saturday, August 18, 2012 3:30pm at Todd Memorial Chapel, 327 N. Indian Hill, Claremont, CA. Gathering at the family home immediately following.
