Clara Borum Cathey Obituary
Clara Borum Cathey

October 21, 1917 - February 9, 2014

Clara Borum Cathey died peacefully in her Long Beach home on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the age of 96. She was born Clara Hoffmann Borum on October 21, 1917 in Virginia. During the Great Depression her parents moved the family to Tennessee where she graduated from Central High School. She met and fell in love with her next door neighbor James Cathey, and in 1938 they were married. In November of 1940 Clara gave birth to their son James Hoffmann Cathey and while her husband served in the war they lived in Miami with her sister. After WWII the family moved west to Colton, California where they purchased several acres of land and built a home. In California, Clara raised their son and began a fruitful career as a secretary and bookkeeper. They spent the latter part of their lives in Oxnard, San Marcos and she moved to Long Beach after her husband's death in 1999. Clara was the proud grandmother of two, Jennifer and Jonathan who spent summers with her in Oxnard, and in 2011she became a great grandmother. She loved to garden, was a talented artist, and a sharp businesswoman. Clara's elegance, quick wit, southern drawl and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. She is survived by her son James Cathey and his wife Linda; her grandchildren Jennifer Cathey Malloy and Jonathan Cathey; her great-grandson Cormac Malloy; and her sister Nancy Fisher. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James and older sisters Frances and Mary. A devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, she was dearly loved and will be missed. A private service will be held for Clara on February 25th at Old Ranch Country Club. Please sign the guestbook
