Dr. Donald Philip Ashley
Don was born June 1, 1922, and peacefully passed away on April 22, 2014. After graduating from Vancouver High School and Washington State University, Don enlisted in the
. He joined the Long Beach Unified School District in 1948 and retired after 42 years. He served as teacher and principal of Sutter Elementary, principal of Cubberley Elementary and Rogers Jr. High, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel, and Assistant Superintendent of the Elementary Division. Don enjoyed many years of pro bono work as an advocate for special needs students after his retirement. Along with loving his faith, family and friends, Don had an affinity for his
Bruins, all things Irish and St. Mary Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rosemary Ashley, and their seven children: Kevin (Joan), Jane (Anne), Maureen, Shawn (Sylvia), Keric (Jan), Brendan (Ruth) and Darren. Don and his "Irish Rose" took great pride in their 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at St. Barnabus Church at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary Medical Center Foundation or to St. Mary Low Vision Center.
