Florence Millan Houser Obituary
Florence Millan Houser
September 12, 1934–February 13, 2013
Resident of San Jose, California
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Florence was born and raised in Redlands, CA. by grandparents Jacinto and Concepcion Romero, as well as her sister Evangeline and their aunts. Florence loved her grandparents dearly, and often reminisced about growing up on their beautiful orange ranch.
She attended Redlands University and obtained her teaching credentials. While employed as a teacher in Barstow, CA, she met her future husband James Houser. They were wed on Sept. 2, 1956 at the Community Presbyterian Church of Redlands. For a time they lived right across the street from where they exchanged their vows, and she taught at Mission School, which was right across from her grandparent's ranch. Later they moved to San Jose for James to attend S.J. State College. Florence continued teaching, and held several assignments over the years, the last before retirement at Hillbrook School.
She enjoyed various hobbies that displayed her great talent for crafts, from building doll-houses to sewing costumes for school plays; from making clothes for her grandchildren to arranging floral displays for weddings. She volunteered at the San Jose Museum of Quilts, and two of her own quilts were featured in a quilt calendar. When she took a break from it all she enjoyed casino gambling, and also loved to read.
Florence was the rare person with wide-ranging skills, an eye for color, and the ability to create beautiful objects. These creations are a part of her that we'll always have with us. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, her Aunt Elizabeth (Betty) Romero, her sons Jimmy (Elke), Jerry (Bernie), Mike and Kenny; grandchildren Jennifer (Roger) Waddell, Jared, James (Melanie), Jacqueline, Julianne, Janie and Olivia; great-grandchildren Jade and Wes. Florence will be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Redlands.
Church services for Florence will be held at The Community Presbyterian Church of Redlands, 3pm on Saturday, March 23. Family and friends are welcome.
