Raymond Chaves
A life-long resident of Redlands, died peacefully at the age of 91 on September 4, 2013.
Raymond was born in Redlands on April 14, 1922, the son of Azorean immigrants. A member of the Greatest Generation, he served proudly during World War II aboard the USS Brown, participating in nine major sea battles in the Pacific Theater. He married Dorothy Holling in 1948 and they made their home in Redlands for the next 65 years.
Raymond was a beekeeper in the Redlands area for many years and spent the off season pursuing his hunting and fishing passions. He and Dorothy spent many summers in Oregon salmon fishing and in Idaho bird hunting during the fall. He loved his family, his friends and his Portuguese heritage. Raymond will be remembered for his love of life, his great sense of humor, and his skill at telling a great joke.
Raymond is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy, his parents Joseph and Philomena, and his brother Joe and sister Eleanor. He is survived by his daughter Margaret (Tom Lynch), brothers John, George and Donald, sister Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Plymouth Village and Redlands Hospice for their kindness and care during this difficult time.
Rosary and visitation will be held on September 12, at 7:00 p.m., at Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Avenue, Redlands. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., September 13, 2013, at S. Francis X Cabrini Catholic Church, 12687 California Street, Yucaipa, with internment immediately following at Riverside National Cemetery.
