Richard Anthony "Dick" Meyer
Oct. 30, 1933 - July 17, 2013
Richard Meyer died following surgery in Orange County at age 79. Mr. Meyer was born Oct. 30, 1933 in Morrisonville, Illinois. Mr. Meyer spent his life dedicated to education and received his BA from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and his masters in mathematics from Arizona State University. He began teaching in 1953 at the Old Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, Ill. and Woodland High School in Woodland, Illinois.
His family moved to Arizona in 1960 where he taught math and served as department chairman at Phoenix Union High School in Arizona and then at South Mountain High. He received Arizona's Outstanding Young Educator award in 1966.
In 1971 he co-authored two high school math books which were widely circulated. In 1973 he was hired by the Chino Valley School District and taught 11 years at Magnolia Junior High. Mr. Meyer also served as principal of Buena Vista High School and in 1992 became principal of the school at Boys Republic and ChinoValley Adult School.
His community activity included serving as president of the Chino Boxing Association, director and president of the West End YMCA and chairman of the Chino Valley YMCA. Mr. Meyer was a member of the Chino Rotary Club with perfect attendance for 39 years and also serving as its president in 1980. Mr. Meyer also served on the board of directors of the Chino Chamber of Commerce and was chairman of its cultural and education committee.
Mr. Meyer was a resident of Claremont. He is preceded in death by his first wife Ivah, his second wife Dee, and his two sons Steven and Scott.
Mr. Meyer is survived by his third son, Stuart, granddaughter Stephanie Meyer and his fiancée Zoila Vargas.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Boys Republic located at 1907 Boys Republic Drive, Chino Hills at noon on Saturday July 27, 2013 with a reception immediately following at Los Serranos Country Club at 15656 Yorba Ave. Chino Hills, CA .
