SALLY JOAN LEISHMAN

Born in Muscatine, Iowa on December 29, 1935 to Tom and Queenie Ackles, our beloved Sally passed away on December 20, 2013 in Northridge, California. She will always be remembered for her positive energy in life, kindness to all, and unselfish attitude towards others. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Leishman, daughters Gwen Leishman and Joan Schultz Bartus (Jay), granddaughter Claire Schultz, grandson Jason Bartus and sister Kim Nixon (Charles). She was preceded in death by her parents Tom and Queenie Ackes and brother David.

While growing up in Rock Island Illinois, Sally and her brother David, entertained in the USO shows in Chicago with dance and theater. In 1945, the family moved out to Hollywood to further pursue their interest in entertainment. She and David continued performing in numerous dancing acts around California at the army bases. After graduating L.A. High School, Sally attended USC where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She met Jerry, a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and they married in 1955 and in 1958, moved to Granada Hills to open Jerry's dental practice.

Sally was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills where she was actively involved for over 50 years. In addition to church activities, she was involved with the Women's Club of Granada Hills and did many theater productions. She also volunteered as a driver for over 30 years with The Braille Institute. While Sally's volunteerism never stopped, she also operated several businesses, including Magic World Costumes and Balloons. With her theater background and wonderful people skills, the business thrived.

Sally's love of life, smiling face, concern for others, and lively spirit will truly be missed.

Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills on Monday, January 13th, 11:00 a.m. Memorial gifts in Sally's memory may be given to: Sally Leishman Memorial Fund c/o First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills, 10400 Zelzah Ave., Northridge, CA 91326.
