Cherrie Ewalt Obituary
Cherrie Ewalt
On Friday, August 8, 2014, around 10:30pm, Cherrie Ewalt went home to her Lord. She was a wife, daughter, Mom, Nana, sister, cousin, friend and daughter of the King. She described herself as a woman of faith and a handmaiden of God's love.
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Ed and Marilyn VanOostendorp, she moved to California in 1969, and married Phil Ewalt after only dating him for four months in 1970. They created a wonderful love story that produced two children: Lindsay Orwig of Minneapolis, MN and Marc Ewalt of Redlands.
Their love story continued when Lindsay married Jonathan Orwig and Marc married Jenny Druan. In 2012, Cherrie's heart happily burst with the birth of granddaughter Lexi, a special gift from Marc and Jenny.
Cherrie spent many hours volunteering throughout her life. She could often be found in her children's classrooms as a room mother and coordinator. She was actively involved at Bethany Reformed Church, where she and Phil attended for the entirety of their 44 years together. When she was not volunteering, she could be found creating or learning. She
pursued many interests, including crochet, quilting, painting, and drawing. She took computer classes before most people had personal computers, and American Sign Language classes just because she could. She attended training to prepare for ministering to others. In her home, she had a do-it-yourself attitude that she passed on to her children.
Nobody was a stranger once they met Cherrie. She had an almost super-natural way of getting people to open up, and by the end of a conversation, a stranger was turned friend.
Cherrie is survived by her husband, children and granddaughter. She also leaves behind her sister Patti and Dale Fulkerson, brother Scott and Cyndy VanOostendorp, Phil's sister Jan and Jim Dodgen, and his brother Eric and Kathy Ewalt, along with multiple nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and friends-made-family.
She will be missed by many. Cherrie is preceded in death by her parents Ed and Marilyn VanOostendorp and Phil's parents Walter and Nancy Ewalt.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13 from 5pm-8pm at Cortner Chapel in Redlands. Her celebration-of-life service will be held on Thursday, August 14 at 11am at Bethany Reformed Church in Redlands. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Cherrie's memory to Redlands Community Hospital's Hospice program.
