James Bedford Russell

Longtime respected Long Beach Attorney James Russell, 82, passed away April 9, 2012. Jim was a philanthropist, community leader, beloved husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He was born in Clinton, Oklahoma to Bert and Bonnie Russell. Jim moved to Long Beach at the age of 9, attended local schools and graduated from Wilson High School, LBCC, Long Beach State and USC Law School. He was active in student government where he served as student body president at Long Beach State and was a member of social organizations, Thaddeus, Hammarbi and SAE. He served his community and profession as president of the Long Beach Bar Association; Downtown Lion's Club, LB Red Cross and was a board member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and LBCC. Before attending Law School, Jim served his country in the Army during the Korean War. While in law school, he worked as a Long Beach lifeguard, and upon graduation he transferred into the Long Beach City Prosecutors office. He later became a partner in the law firm of Pray, Price, Williams and Russell. Jim enjoyed tennis, racquetball, volleyball and water skiing. His high school sweetheart, Virginia White, a loving of wife of almost 60 years preceded him in death January 2011. He traveled extensively with Virginia, family and friends to Europe, Australia, Asia, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii. He is survived by his son, Christopher (Debi) and daughter, Lisa Harris (Ted), granddaughters Jaclyn, Reanne and Danielle; sister in laws Carole Breithaupt, Dorothy Hill (John) and many nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 2 pm Friday, May 4, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 370 Junipero Avenue, Long Beach. A celebration of life reception will follow at 3:30 p.m., Old Ranch Country Club, 3901 Lampson Avenue, Seal Beach.
