Leonard Schmoldt Obituary
Leonard Schmoldt
Leonard passed away peacefully on February 14, 2013 at St John's Hospital in Oxnard of heart failure after spending a nice day with his wife of 53 years, Anne.
Len was born 10-13-1930 in Elgin, Illinois to Artie and Margaret Schmoldt, but he grew up with a wonderful stepfather, John Braasch. At the age of 13, he went to live with the Gromers on their farm. He wanted to be a farmer but went into the Army where he served in Korea in the infantry.
Upon returning, he then worked for Pat Wirsing at Pat's Service Station in Elgin. He enjoyed life a lot and met his future wife, Anne. They married after she graduated from Evanston Hospital School of Nursing on October 3, 1959.
Len hated the snow so Len and Anne moved to California in 1960. Len went to work at General Telephone Electric in 1965 after buying their first home in Oxnard. GTE moved him to Santa Barbara/Goleta in 1972 and to Pomona /Cucamonga in 1976. They lived in Upland until 1989 and returned to Oxnard where he worked at Laidlaw until his retirement in 1995.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Anne. He was blessed with three wonderful children, John (Sondra and Jennifer), Sara, and Sandra Artigas (Richard, Rachel, Richard, Teresa and Mark); three grand- children, Matt, Kevin and Karen Sarto and their families; aunt, Florence Drafall and cousin, Richard Braasch.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Braasch; stepfather, John Braasch; stepsister, Mary Braasch; and his daughter, Sue Sarto-Volk. Len and Dave Gromer are now catching up on NASCAR and fishing on cloud 9 together.
The family is grateful to the staff at St John's Hospital for taking good care of him. We are ever grateful to Dr Bruce Barbosa, Dr Scott Zager, Dr H.E. Elson, Dr Major and their staffs for all the years they cared for him.
A memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn, Covina Hills on March 9, 2013 at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations, in Leonard's name, to: Westside German Shepherd Rescue, 2721 Wigtown Road, Los Angeles, CA 90064.
