Betty May Junker Thornton
Died Tuesday March 19, 2013 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Thornton was born in Cozad, Nebraska on 31 December 1925 and lived in Nebraska until she attended University of Utah. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nursing education in 1946. She married Bruce G. Thornton on May 6, 1950. They had four children—Linda; Anthony Bruce; Matthew Jay; and Laurie. She was widowed in 1989 and her son Anthony preceded her in death in 2002. She is survived by Linda (and her husband Steven Broiles), Matthew, and Laurie and her grandson, David Thornton Broiles of Ramarama, Auckland, New Zealand. `
Mrs. Thornton and her family came to Ontario in 1955 and it became home to them.
During her children's school years she was very active in PTA at Lincoln School and Hawthorne School. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader.
Following her nursing work in California at Kaiser Hospital, Fontana, and San Antonio Community Hospital, Upland, Mrs. Thornton also attended University of La Verne where she earned a bachelor of arts in order to qualify for a California teaching credential. She taught elementary school at Edison School until her retirement. She had also taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska before entering university.
Mrs. Thornton was very active in the First Christian Church of Ontario for over 50 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and in Christian Women's Fellowship.
She was an avid gardener and played duplicate and rubber bridge.
Funeral services will be held at the Ontario First Christian Church, Holt and Vine Avenues, Ontario, on Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m. Private interment follows on another day.
