Dr. John Lewis Paulus
– A Life Remembered
Dr. John Lewis Paulus passed away peacefully at the age of 87 early on Saturday, March 30th, 2013 at his home in Leisure World in Laguna Woods, CA. Dr. Paulus lived an incredibly full and vibrant life, and will be kindly remembered by his many patients over the years, residents of Leisure World, and family members.
John Lewis Paulus, who was born on August 11, 1925, and his sister, Ruth, were born in Nelsonville, OH to parents Ruth and Herbert Paulus. He grew up in the Cleveland area during the Depression era and that experience made a lasting impression on him. He excelled at Lakewood High School, as a student, athlete, and performing artist. He was a state championship golfer as well as a state champion trombone player. After Lakewood High School he went to Yale University, again excelling academically as well as athletically, where he was the captain of the Yale lacrosse team. While at Yale, John Lewis Paulus met Patricia Lyman Lewis, a native of Redlands, CA, who attended Vassar College. Following Yale, John Paulus attended Columbia University Medical School where he received his medical degree. He served as a Navy physician during the Korean War. John and Patricia then moved to Redlands, California, where they started their family, having four children: John Anthony (Tony), Joan (who later changed her name to Gurukirn Kaur Khalsa), Stuart and Brad. Dr. Paulus began his incredibly successful pediatric practice in Redlands at the Cajon Street Medical Center. He started additional medical centers in Beaumont and Banning. He also served as the doctor for the University of Redlands football team and saw patients at Redlands Community Hospital. Following the passing of his wife Patricia, he married Judy Brover, whose two children, Shelli and Andrea, became part of the blended Paulus family. Dr. Paulus practiced pediatrics for 30 years. Following his retirement, Judy and John moved to Rancho Mirage. When Judy passed away, he married his third wife, Jacqui Jennings, and together they lived at Leisure World in Laguna Woods, CA. There he served for a number of years as the overseer for property management. Dr. John L. Paulus will be most remembered for his dedication and service in his medical practice, as a community member, and as a loving husband and father.
Dr. Paulus is survived by his wife Jacqui, sister Ruth, six children, twelve grandchildren, and one great grandchild. No funeral or memorial services are planned.

Just saw this online. My condolences to the family of Dr. Paulus-- the best doctor I ever had! I still remember Dr. Paulus making house calls to our home when I was very young and too ill to come in. He had a gentle and kind demeanor and I trusted him completely! Thank you, Dr. Paulus.

Sincerely, Wendi (Winder) Proffitt

I will always remember John for being a very polite and very kind person. I took care of him ( as a caregiver) for 4 months. He was very good to me and we had wonderful and memorable time together. He's full of wisdom and he always encouraged everybody to be a good person and of service to those in need. John I will always remember you in my heart and prayers..
