Her family moved to Southern California in 1944. Irma graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1952. She married Herman Turntine in 1953 and had two children, Patricia and Sherman. Irma worked several years in the medical field as a nurse in Compton, Calif., before retiring in the 1980s, when she moved to Oakland, Calif., to be close to her daughter.
