Irma Lee (Norford) Turntine died April 30 in Alameda, Calif., after a short illness. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother. Born in Delhi, La., to Martha Carter and David Norford as the oldest of three siblings, Irma was raised in Vicksburg, Miss., where she was brought up in the Christian faith. Her family moved to Southern California in 1944. Irma graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1952. She married Herman Turntine in 1953 and had two children, Patricia and Sherman. Irma worked several years in the medical field as a nurse in Compton, Calif., before retiring in the 1980s, when she moved to Oakland, Calif., to be close to her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Turntine) Goldsmith, of Oakland, and son, Sherman Turntine (Pamela), of San Jose; brothers Donald Norford and George Norford (Rosalyn), both of Long Beach, Calif.; grandsons U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Jerell Goldsmith (Maria), of Yuma, Ariz., and U.S Navy A02 Petty Officer Jamar Evans, of Jacksonvile., Fla., and great-grandchildren Jayden and Laila Goldsmith of Yuma, Ariz. She also leaves to cherish her loving memories a host of relatives and friends.
