A life long resident of Redlands passed away June 30, 2013 at home, just three weeks shy of his 96th birthday. Born at Redlands Community Hospital on July 22, 1917, he was the youngest of six siblings. He grew up on Eureka St. near Smiley Library where he often spent hours on hot summer days. He attended local schools graduating from Redlands High School in 1935. He attended Riverside City College while working at Fowlers Men's Store on Orange St. between State St. and Citrus Ave. In 1941, while working at Fowlers, he met Virginia Young, a teacher in the Redlands School District. In January of 1942 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at North Island in San Diego. On August 15, 1943, he and Virginia were married in Los Angeles. In 1946, after WWII, they moved back to Redlands where he resumed working at Fowlers. After several years he accepted a position at Harris Company in Redlands as manager of men's clothing. His career with Harris' would extend 26 years and lead him to management positions at Harris' Riverside and executive manager Harris' Redlands. He retired in 1978. He was an active member in the Redlands community and his beloved First Congregational Church of Redlands. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia and survived by his son, Donn of San Diego, daughter and son-in-law Diana and Rick Schwering of Del Mar, brother and sister-in-law Steve and Blanche Cavanaugh of Riverside, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 20 at First Congregational Church of Redlands, 2 W. Olive Ave. The Reverend Lowell Linden, pastor of First Congregational Church will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church "Stain Glass restoration fund", 2 W. Olive Ave., Redlands, CA 92373.
