Iola Alene Zumkeller, the daughter of John and Ethel (Merritt) Cook, was born July 30, 1926, at Denver, Colo. She passed away on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 91 years and 18 days.
Iola was raised in Denver, Colo., where she attended school. She moved to Portland, Ore., in 1942, working in the shipyards during World War II. In 1945, Iola was united in marriage to William Tierney. They moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1949 and later to French Camp, Calif. To this union, her son Jim was born. Iola later married Robert Zumkeller in July of 1961 at Carson City, Nev. She moved to Carson, Iowa, in 1990 to care for her aunt, and in 1996, to Red Oak, to be closer to her son and his family.
Iola inherited her father's cooking skills as he was a chef in Denver, and she was an excellent cook. She also had a green thumb with plants. Iola loved her family dearly. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. Iola attended Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak.
Iola was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Cook.
Iola is survived by her son, James Tierney and wife Angie of Red Oak; granddaughter, Lisa Schmid and husband Aaron of Red Oak; two great-grandchildren: A.J. and Ashley Marie Schmid of Red Oak; and sister, Peggy King of Council Bluffs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak. The Rev. Gary Walters is officiating. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour before the service on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice in Red Oak. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
