LaVerne Joy DeWitt, 84, Griswold, died Aug. 28, 2014, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
LaVerne, the daughter of Vernon and Myrtle (Rousch) Tye, was born Jan. 8, 1930, on the family farm northwest of Griswold. LaVerne attended Griswold High School.
On April 22, 1950, she married Dewey W. DeWitt. LaVerne and Dewey lived in Griswold where she worked at Hansen Egg Company, the Legion, and the Care Center. She and Dewey moved to Council Bluffs in 1981. They returned to Griswold in 2003. Dewey died October 12, 2005. LaVerne continued to live in Griswold until failing health caused her to move to Red Oak.
LaVerne enjoyed sewing, walking and cooking.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Kathrine; her parents; her grandson, Matthew DeWitt; and her brothers, Jay, John, Marlowe and Elgie.
LaVerne is survived by her children, Richard DeWitt of Shenandoah, Michael DeWitt of Red Oak and Deb Jespersen of Red Oak; her grandchildren, Carrie, Alexis, Jamie, Weston, Austen, Gage, Trey and Jacob; her great-grandchildren, Cade, Corey, Anika and Sierra; her brothers, Gyle Tye of Glenwood and Jack Tye of Griswold; her sisters, Gloria Arnold of St. Charles, Ill. and Suzanne Harder of Greenfield; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment was in the Whipple Cemetery.
Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
