Lois Marie Schmid, 92, Red Oak, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
Lois was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Red Oak, the daughter of William and Marie (Bailey) Young. The family lived in Iowa, then Missouri for a while before moving back to Red Oak where Lois graduated high school in 1943. In her younger days, she worked as a telephone operator before her marriage to George Schmid on Feb. 3, 1945, in Red Oak. She later worked for Red Oak Fruit and Wholesale Grocery, owned and operated the Mode O Day clothing store, and retired from K-Mart. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, DCCW, and VFW Auxiliary. She was very creative and enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, tatting, and crocheting.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, George Schmid on Sept. 28, 2009; sister, Fern Olson; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Schmid.
Survivors include her children, Dennis Schmid and wife Kay of Des Moines; Dianne Melendez and husband Angel of Waukee; David Schmid and wife Jackie of Red Oak; Tim Schmid and wife Charla of Red Oak; and Teresa Wadhams and husband Mark of Pengilly, Minn.; grandchildren, Tony Schmid and wife Lisa of Des Moines; Krista Douglas of Des Moines; Tammi Parkhurst and husband Tony of Winterset; Dominic Melendez and wife Shilo of Valdosta, Ga.; Andrea Melendez of Ft. Myers, Fla.; Alicia Melendez of Humble, Texas; Valerie Utsler and husband Corey of Winterset; Angela Raffensberger of Omaha; Aaron Schmid and wife Lisa of Red Oak; Emily Schmid of Urbandale; and Katie O'Neal and husband Justin of Norwalk; many great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Wankum of McPherson, Kan.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Recitation of Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2018, at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with visitation with the family to follow until 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
