The youngest of six children, Shirley Howlette was born May 17, 1930, to Mary E. and Jacob Johnson in Hartington, Neb. Shirley grew up in Omaha, where she graduated from Tech High School in 1948. After graduating, she worked several years at TV station WOW in Omaha before marrying Richard Howlette. To this union, three children were born, Nancy Gale, Susan Renee, and David Jon.
Shirley loved to sing and spent many years singing with her church choir and encouraged her children to explore any musical talent they may possess. Shirley stayed at home with her children for many years before reentering the workforce as a teller at Houghton State Bank in the mid '70s. After working at the bank for several years, she left to pursue her long-desired wish for a college degree. This she proudly accomplished, graduating Magna Cum Laude from UNO in 1985 with a Bachelors Degree in General Studies.
Shirley was part of the original CDS Global work force in Red Oak and worked for CDS until her retirement. She remained in Red Oak for many years after retirement, moving to Fox Run Assisted Living in 2014 where she enjoyed many friends and social activities.
Shirley was proceeded in death by her parents; and siblings Emer, Logan, Orval, Agnes, and Velta.
She is survived by her three children, Nancy Howlette (Rod Nowels) of Red Oak; Susan (Les) Vogler of Louisville, Neb.; and David of Chaing Mai, Thailand; four grandchildren and their children, Amber Kennedy and sons Kenneth and Caleb of Omaha; Aaron (Amber) Kennedy and daughters Ana, Peyton, and Gabby of Crescent; and Jason Crouse and Sarah Sperry, both of Council Bluffs; three step-granddaughters and their children, Heather Freeman and children Saryah, Izaiah; TJ, Christine (Tyler) Gowan and daughter Addison; and Melanie (Trevor) Wynegar and daughter Nora Grace, all of Lincoln, Neb.; special niece, Carole (Mick) Butz of Cedar Rapids; along with many other nieces, nephews, and friends.
