Mrs. Helen Freeman Walter, 82, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 after a two year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at 1 p.m. in St. James United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Walter, a native of Randolph County, Indiana, was a 1952 nursing graduate of Indiana University
. She married and made her home in Greenville in 1954 and was employed as a nurse at Pitt County Memorial Hospital for a year. In subsequent and later years she worked with her husband in his chiropractic medical office until their retirement in 1993.
Mrs. Walter was a long time member of St. James United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She had also sung with both Sweet Adelines and the Community Pops Chorus, as well as having played the French horn and euphonium in the Tar River Community Band. A Senior Games participant for 20 years, she competed in ping pong, badminton, basketball and softball at the local, state and national level winning a closet full of medals. She was also an ambassador for Senior Games and served as the flag-bearer for North Carolina at the National Games.
Mrs. Walter was preceded in death by her parents Marie Edger, Charles F. Freeman; and her brother, David Freeman.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Stanley M. Walter; son, Stanley Marc Walter and wife, Jane of Fishers, Ind.; daughters, Kristi Walter Wagner and husband, Chuck, of Arden, and Jeri Lynn Walter of Apex; grandchildren, Maegan Marie Clawges, Daniel Marc Walter, Rebecca Jane Walter, Sarah Margaret Walter, Stephen Henry Walter; and brothers, John Edgar Freeman of Daleville, Ind. and Paul Charles Freeman of Midway City, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenville-Pitt County Senior Games.
