WILLIAMSTON - John Leonard Swain, 75, died Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at his home. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors and Masonic rites.
Mr. Swain was born in Martin County on May 1, 1938, son of the late John Eason and Bertie Gurganus Swain. He was the owner and operator of Swain's Wood Shop. He had served as Police Chief
for several years and as a town commissioner. He also served in the United States Air Force. He was an active bail bondsman, and a 32 degree Mason, Scottish rite and a Shriner.
On Dec. 20, 1960, he married Ruth Fisk Swain who survives. Survivors in addition to his wife are a daughter, Lori Matamoros and husband, Erik, of Williamston; son, Jack Swain and wife, Debbie, of Williamston; brothers, Bud Swain and wife, Janice, of Williamston, Robert Swain and wife, Penny, and Rick Swain and wife, Judy, all of Robersonville; sisters, Ruth Roberson and husband, Maehugh, of Robersonville and Grace Jones of Matthews; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Hubert Swain.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1-2:30 p.m. at West End Baptist Church and other times at the residence, 1204 W. Main St., Williamston or the Swain Plantation, Race Track Road, Robersonville. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church or the
Arrangements by Biggs Funeral Home in Williamston.
