Margaret Cox Crawford

Mrs. Margaret Cox Crawford, 91, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel officiated by the Rev. Steve Davis. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Crawford, a native of Ayden, was born on Dec. 26, 1922, daughter of the late Annie and George Cox. In 1939, she graduated from Winterville High School as salutatorian and voted best-all-around student of her class. In 1943, she graduated from East Carolina Teacher's College (ECU) with a BA degree in Primary Education, and in 1950 earned her MA degree in Elementary Education and in 1960 received her Library Science Certification. She taught in numerous Pitt County Schools including, Belvoir, Grimesland, and Winterville. Mrs. Crawford served as a librarian at Winterville High School, Nash County and Aurora High School. In May of 1980, she retired after 33 years as an educator. After retirement, she was employed for 13 years at Greenville Chiropractic Center.
A member of Arlington Blvd. Baptist Church since 1957, Mrs. Crawford served in many capacities. She taught various classes from 4's to 5's through adult ladies. For many years she was active in the Baptist Women, and was the first lady deacon of Arlington Blvd. Baptist Church. She served as chairperson of Diaconate Board for three years, served on various committees, and also served as Director of 4's and 5's on South Roanoke Baptist Assoc. Sunday School board.
Mrs. Crawford served as a volunteer for the Council on Aging and delivered Meals on Wheels. She also volunteered with South Roanoke Baptist Association. She will be remembered for all the treats she prepared and carried to shut-ins and to the sick, and for all the cards and notes she sent to all she felt were family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph C. Crawford in 2002; and a brother, Dr. George E. Cox.
She is survived by her son, Billy D. Crawford and wife, Penny, of Virginia Beach, Va.; granddaughter, Amy Crawford Miller and husband, Todd, of Apex; grandson, Wes Crawford and wife, Suzanne, of Winterville; great-grandchildren, Alex Register, of Advance, Savannah Crawford and Sierra Southerlin, both of Winterville; step-grandchildren, Lisa Ritzel, and Hobie Ritzel and wife, Terry; step-great-granddaughters, Allie and Katie Ritzel, and Kelly and Jennifer Baumgarten, all of Virginia Beach; brothers, W.B. Cox and wife, Jerry, of Richmond, Va., Dr. Grady Cox and wife, Jean, of Auburn, Ala., and the Rev. Ron Cox and wife, Linda, of Wasilla, Ala.; sister in-law, Laverne Cox, of Fleetwood; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
