Mr. Roscoe L. King, 89, died Thursday, April 10, 2014.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.
Mr. King, a native of Sampson County, attended Piney Grove High School and the University of Georgia
. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and was sent to Europe where he served in the 69th Infantry Division until June of 1946. He then moved to Greenville where he was employed with Batchelor Brothers Menâ€™s Shop until he was called back into service in 1950 with a National Guard unit and served in South Korea. He was awarded a medal for meritorious service in Korea. Mr. King returned home to Greenville in 1952 and began a career in banking with First Federal Savings and Loan. He served on the Board of Directors for 28 years and was Senior Vice-President. Following his retirement from First Federal in 1983, he began working with Home Federal Bank in the north eastern part of North Carolina where they opened two new offices, retiring in June, 1993.
Mr. King was a former member of the Jaycees and a member of the Greenville Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years. He was a member of Greenville Masonic Lodge #284, a 32nd degree Mason, and a Shriner. He was involved with the Pitt County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, serving as a board member for a number of years and as Chairman of the Board in 1961. For ten years he served on the Greenville Housing Authority. A member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, he was an usher for many years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vertie B. King, a brother, John S. King; and a sister, Jannie Belle Strickland.
He is survived by: sons, Vick King and wife, Sue, of Washington, N.C.; David King and wife, Lee Lee, of Wilmington; sisters, Henrietta Howard of Pensacola, Fla.; and Geneva Matthis and husband, William â€œLittle Budâ€, of Clinton; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth King of Greenville, John Robert King, Lela Elizabeth King and David Anderson King all of Wilmington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday from 10-11:15 a.m. the Wilkerson Funeral Home.
