Velma B. "Granny" Bailey

BEAR GRASS – Sunday morning, July 21, 2013, God called another angel home.
Velma was born in the Bear Grass area, Martin County, on August 26, 1921 to the late James Augusta Bailey and Mary Elsie Leary Bailey. She was married on Jan. 5, 1946 to Warner A. Bailey Jr. She lived her entire life in the Bear Grass Community and the Town of Bear Grass.
Velma graduated from Bear Grass High School and attended Atlantic Christian College (Barton). She was a trusted employee in the Administration Office of Martin General Hospital for 34 years.
Velma embodied the words of Jesus when he said "I come not to be served, but to serve." She took this scripture to heart and served in so many ways that it is difficult to put them on paper. She joined the Presbyterian Church in 1935 and was one of the commissioned members when the Bear Grass Presbyterian Church received a certificate of separate organization from the Williamston Church in May, 1939. From that time forward she was a special gift to the church and community. She gave freely to the church despite her full time job and always found time to be a strong advocate for the sick and hurting in our community. She served the church as Deacon, Secretary of the Board of Deacons, Nominating Committee, Women's Church Circle President, Women's Church Circle Secretary, Women's Church Circle Treasurer, Bible School Director, Chairperson of various committees, and as a valued member of the choir. On July 20, 2004, Velma was awarded the Outstanding Older Adult Award by the Presbytery of New Hope and the Bear Grass Presbyterian Church. Recognition and rewards were not her goal in life. She just wanted to help.
Velma is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Bailey: grandchildren, Regina Walters and husband, Quinn, Phillip Ray Bailey Jr. and wife, Karen: great-grandchildren, Caitlin Cratt, Lauren Walters, Morgan Walters, Christian Walters, Leslie Bailey: great-grandchild, Holly Wells; sisters, Hazel Manning, Gladys Martin: and brother, Frank Bailey and wife, Ann.
She was predeceased by her husband, Warner A. Bailey Jr.; the joy of her life, her son Phillip Ray Bailey Jr.; sisters, Grace Knox, Rachel Parnell, Virginia Bailey; and brothers, Garland, Coy and Roy Bailey.
The family will receive visitors at the Bear Grass Presbyterian Church Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following at 3 p.m. in the church. All other times the family will receive visitors at the home at 1100 Green Street, Bear Grass. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston following the service.
Memorials may be made to the Bear Grass Fire-Rescue Department.
