FUQUAY-VARINA - William "Bill" Crane Griffin, 79, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 surrounded by his family and after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Ara Brown Griffin; daughters, Leigh Griffin and husband, John W. Harris, Laura K. Galeta and husband, Christopher M. Galeta; son, William C. Griffin Jr. and wife, Paula S. Griffin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Taylor Bobbitt and fiancee, Stacie Clemons, Robert Borger, Kersten Galeta, Meg Griffin and Kendall Griffin; sister, Margaret G. Thompson and husband, Major A.B. Thompson, USMC (Ret.); numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Bill was born Oct. 31, 1933 and raised in Roanoke Rapids. Bill graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy in 1955. While at UNC he joined Sigma Nu fraternity. After graduation of UNC, he was enlisted in the United States Army
and stationed in Garmish, Germany. Bill and Ara have many fond memories of their early married life traveling around Europe. After his discharge from the Army, Bill returned to Roanoke Rapids and joined his father at Griffin Drug Company, Inc. Bill owned and operated Griffin Drug until 1990. He was proud to have a life membership in the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association. Bill and Ara moved to Fuquay-Varina in 2001.
Bill was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church of Roanoke Rapids, where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder, and he was an Elder at Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church. He loved all ACC sports, but especially his beloved Tar Heels. Over his lifetime, Bill served his community as an Eagle Scout, in the Kiwanis Club and as a blood donor.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Fuquay-Varina Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m., Saturday. Visitation will be at the church in the Ransdell Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., prior to the service.
