David Winborne Rees, 34, died at his home on Friday, August 23, 2013. A service of Holy Eucharist in thanksgiving for his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2013, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville, of which he was a lifelong member. Interment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will greet friends following the service in the church parish hall.
David was born on Jan. 9, 1979, in Greenville, the beloved son of James Lester Rees and Franceine Perry Rees. He graduated from J.H. Rose High School and East Carolina University where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science, minoring in communication. While in college, David earned membership in numerous honor societies, including Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. During his adolescence, he was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Children of the American Revolution, which he served as North Carolina state president during his senior year in high school. He was employed as office manager and paralegal by the Greenville law firm Alcorn & Haggard where he demonstrated a keen talent for legal research. He was an avid fan of ECU Pirates football and greatly enjoyed attending and discussing the games. Throughout his life, David exhibited great affection for his family and friends, and he was a lifelong lover of animals, especially cats. He maintained a cheerful, optimistic demeanor which often brightened the spirits of people around him. He will be warmly remembered for his intelligence, sense of humor, browned-eyed good looks, and great hugs.
David was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved girlfriend Rizwana Fahim Siddiqui; brother, Carl J. Rees and wife, Melissa, their children Cameron and Maggie; aunt Phyllis P. Foster and husband, Johnny; cousin, Katherine S. Walton and husband, Kevin, and their son, Benjamin; uncle, Charles J. Rees and wife, Marie, their children Bruce Rees and Gail Gove; loving godmother, Dr. Lena Carawan; and a close-knit group of treasured friends including Kirk Carawan, Will Dodge, Mike Abessinio, Patrick Rider, Jack Edwards, Matt Nobles and John Papalas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, 3520 Tupper Dr., Greenville, NC 27834.
