Jack Gordon Barnhill, 86, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012. Jack was the son of Paul and Howard Barnhill of East Prairie, Mo. He was married to Dorothy Lee Humke on August 4, 1949, who preceded him in death in June, 2009.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday at The First Presbyterian Church.
After serving in the Army during World War II and attending college after the war, Jack began his professional career as an associate professor in Illinois and Missouri. The family moved to Big Rapids, Mich. in 1968, where Jack worked for almost 20 years in the School of Business at Ferris State College as a professor and assistant dean before retiring to Florida. Jack and Dorothy moved to Greenville in 2003 to be near their daughter, Paula.
Jack was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, participating in the Harvey Webb Sunday School class as president and treasurer, serving in the New Form of Government task force, delivering Meals on Wheels, and providing communion to homebound church members. He was actively involved in the Senior Citizens Venturers Program, served as an elder, and was recognized as the church's 2012 Outstanding Older Adult at a recent ceremony in Rocky Mount.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by his oldest son, Thomas Luke; and his sisters Marilyn "June" Barnhill, Betty Taylor, Jane Boggs, and Sue Barnhill.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula Barnhill of Greenville; son John Barnhill, daughter-in-law Vicki, and grandsons Wesley and Paul of Burke, Va.; brothers, Paul Barnhill, Larry Barnhill and Ben Barnhill; and sister MaryAnn Barnhill.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30-7:30 at the home of Paula Barnhill in Ayden and immediately following the service in the church Welcome Center.
