Sarah Barnes Sugg, 95, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 in Greenville. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church by the Rev. Mary Boyd Click and the Rev. Reece Jones. The visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born in Maxton to Benjamin Shaw and Martha Allen Barnes, she grew up in Kinston and had lived in Greenville since her marriage to the late Benjamin Bruce Sugg Jr. in 1941. Mrs. Sugg was also predeceased by her brother, Oliver Roderick Barnes.
She attended Flora McDonald College, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and East Carolina University. Mrs. Sugg was a member of First Christian Church Greenville, the Thalian Book Club, several bridge clubs and a former member of the Greenville Service League and the Senior German Club. For many years she was active in Girl Scouts, the Greenville Museum of Art, and Sheppard Memorial Library, having served on the boards of all three. She always thought of herself as an amateur artist but became a professional rather late in life. Pastel portraits of children were her specialty. Her interests were broad; gardening, bridge, and reading being three of her favorite activities.
She is survived by her daughters, Martha Tippette and husband, Dodson, of Garner, and Sally Wheeler and husband, Howard, of Greenville; four grandchildren, Amy Tippette and Jon Salter of Raleigh, Bruce Tippette and wife, Elizabeth, of Winston-Salem, Bradford Wheeler and wife, Jenni, of Durham, and Benjamin Wheeler of New Orleans; two great-grandchildren, Ethan Salter and Liam Tippette; many loving nieces and nephews; and long-time friend, Lillie Rodgers.
Memorials may be made to First Christian Church Greenville, P.O. Box 2366, Greenville, NC 27836-0366.
