Mr. William Isler "Billy" Wooten Jr., 77, died Monday, July 2, 2012. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. in Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Wooten, a native of Greenville, was the son of the late Dr. William and Pattie Wooten. After graduating from Greenville High School he received his undergraduate degree from Duke University. He then served in the US Army for two years and returned home to attend law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following law school he served as a law clerk for Judge Clifton Moore in Raleigh prior to returning to Greenville. He began practicing law in Greenville with Judge J.W.H. Roberts in 1963 and continued in his own practice for 49 years until 2012. He was a member and Past President of the Pitt County Bar Association.
Mr. Wooten was a longtime member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church and served as the church secretary for 30 years. He was a member of the Greenville Rotary Club and served as the club secretary for a number of years.
Mr. Wooten enjoyed living in the same house in which he was raised and practicing law in the same building where his father had practiced medicine. He was a devoted husband and father who treasured the time he spent with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna Stowe Wooten; daughters, Margaret Wooten Pierson and husband, Noah, of Wilmington and Pattie Elizabeth Wooten of Greenville; son, William I. Wooten III and wife, Erin, of Durham; grandchildren, Ethan Pierson, Molly Pierson, Van Pierson and William I. "Wade" Wooten, IV; and sister-in-law, Harriet H. Wooten of Greenville.
The family will receive friends at the church Thursday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m.
