Mr. Thurman Eugene Nelson, 84, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Mr. Nelson was a native of Pitt County and attended Pitt County schools. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for many years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Following retirement, Thurman enjoyed gardening along with his wife, and they enjoyed sharing fruits and vegetables with family, friends and strangers who passed by. A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, Thurman will be sorely missed by the many who loved him.
Mr. Nelson is survived by: his wife of 63 years, Margaret Ann Whichard Nelson; son, John Thurman Nelson and wife, Jodi, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jennifer Nelson Berkey and husband, Nick, of Greenville, Stephanie Nelson McCauley and husband, Ryan, and Adam Nelson, all of Raleigh; great-grandchildren, Ava Grace Alger and Emmelyn Claire McCauley; sisters, Goldie McGraw and Betty Lou Dudas, both of Richmond; brothers, James Elbert "Pete" Nelson of Williamston, Paul Dalton Nelson of Kinston and Luke Nelson of Greenville; and many relatives and friends.
